In the past, many people used “radiant,” non-ducted heating systems, such as panels and wood stoves, to keep their homes warm. As a result, the homes didn’t include the duct work necessary to add central air conditioning. In these homes, the only cooling option that didn’t require a complete remodeling was installation of window air conditioning units.

Today, ductless mini split systems offer a much more effective and energy efficient alternative. Consisting of two main components — an outdoor condenser and an indoor evaporator — a mini split system requires an experienced mini split contractor to drill one three-inch hole through the wall of the building to connect the two components. The result is a modern HVAC system that can provide both heating and cooling.

Flexibility

A variety of mini split models meet the needs of different spaces and rooms. Some models have as many as four interior units (or zones) that connect to a single outdoor condenser. The single hole needed to connect indoor and outdoor mini split components is one of the least invasive HVAC options on the market. Installation is fast and relatively mess-free.

Energy Efficiency

Besides the energy savings that you get from the customization and flexibility of a mini split system, the lack of ducts increases energy efficiency throughout your home. Air loss from ducted central air systems in homes can account for up to 30% of unnecessary energy consumption from leakage. This is particularly true with ducts located in under-insulated areas, such as attics.

Discreet Installation

A mini split installer can place an outdoor unit up to 50 feet away from its indoor evaporator, making it easy to conceal the unit on the side or back of the home. In addition, indoor units are easy to install high on walls or on ceilings, out of the line of vision, making them much less obtrusive than window units.
